No Whiskey!
Was that real or imagined? I was tired, thirsty, hungry and fighting to see the difference.
I was slowly becoming convinced that we weren’t in Billings
and were still in Kansas. I was still a doubter because I could remember the
flight and everything that happened during it. I was still very sick and spent
much of my time sleeping. Even though I had many dreams I was only visited by
the narrator one more time.
It was much more relaxing and laid back. The narrator took me
to a beautiful meadow surrounded by a forest; he explained that there were not
many real outdoorsmen left, and they had mostly died off. A true outdoorsman
knows the importance of the relationship between man and nature. How important it is to help nature manage
itself, from timber to water and everything in between. As he talked, I noticed
a wheelchair far in the background and the longer he talked, the closer it came
until the wheelchair was right beside me. I remember thinking, what’s with the wheelchair.
He explained that the wheelchair was a
tool to be used while I healed and was not something to fear.
When I woke up, I understood that using a wheelchair was going
to be necessary, and I was ok with it.
I had another dream that I had been talking to my buddy Cody,
and he was telling me about a guy he knew who had a massive stroke and how he had
made a full recovery, even improved his health and lived a long and happy life.
I liked that story. Cody and I started
making plans for my escape. We had made an elaborate plan for me to get outside
the hospital, where he would meet me with a bottle of whiskey and take me home.
I was very disappointed when I told Debbie about Cody’s visit
and she told me that Cody and Annette had been outside the hospital, but they weren’t
allowed in. So, I couldn’t have talked
to Cody. That only meant one thing to me,
– No Whiskey!
Deb had to leave for a while, so I sat in my room and watched
tv, well mostly listened to tv. There was an interview with Herschel Walker talking
about an old teammate that had been paralyzed in a four-wheeler accident. Herschel
was so devastated about this, that he had made it his mission to team up with designers
and make the world’s safest four-wheeler that anyone could ride, even his paralyzed
friend. They showed people riding it on
the beach; boy, it looked cool. I wanted one.
When Deb and Sara got back, I told them about Herschel Walker’s
new four-wheeler and that we were going to get one because it would help me get
around. Sara went to work looking it up on her computer only to find there was
no such thing. We argued for a while, she assured me that she had tried many searches
and there were no four-wheelers for handicapped people.
Ok, this was getting
old real fast. I was tired, thirsty,
hungry and apparently losing my Friggin’ Mind! And don’t forget- No Whiskey!
